Improv Night

You never know how funny you are until you've made yourself laugh to death, and even then you don't know how funny you are because you're dead.

Fortunately, death is not the only answer to discovering your sense of humor. This idea is being posted mainly for LDS ward activity leaders, although it can be adapted to fit most other situations.
  • See if there is anyone in your ward with a history in theatre, especially in improv. If there are people who know how to use improv, ask them if they'd be willing to help with this activity.
  • I suggest starting the activity with some awesome sketch comedy/improv. If you do that, you'll be more likely to grab the attention of your attendees. They'll want to learn how to do improv if they can see that it's awesome. If you can't find a group of people to come do a live thing, there are plenty of clips online. I suggest Whose Line is it Anyway? for sketch comedy clips. Don't let this snippet be too long. You just want it to pique interest in the event, not have it be the event.
  • After a demonstration (live or recorded) of hilarious improv, have the person that will be teaching about improv do their spiel. How they teach it, of course, is up to them.
  • After some "workshop" type things, have your group (separated into smaller groups) prepare their own sketch comedy shows. The teacher can help them prepare this. I strongly suggest that your large group be broken up into smaller groups so that there will be an audience.
  • I do NOT suggest that you tell your ward to come to this event prepared with a sketch comedy routine. This can disuade people from coming. If they didn't have time to get a group together and prepare anything, they won't want to come. Also, they might not know how to do this sort of thing, and if they're asked to come already prepared, they won't feel comfortable with the event.
  • If you do use this as an LDS ward event, be sure to set guidelines on appropriateness. As an avid supporter of "That's What She Said" jokes, I know that humor can get a tad out of hand.
